Large Moroccan Berber Chest - Hand-Carved Wood with Camel Bone
This Moroccan storage chest is as beautiful as it is functional! Entirely hand-carved, this has a flat top that is extensively decorated with relief designs, inlaid camel bone, and metal rivets (thought to bring protection). The camel bone has been engraved with vine-like designs, and in the center of the lid is an interesting design, almost like a face in the middle.
On the front are three distinct carvings in the iconic shape of a mosque, an integral part of Moroccan culture. This area is surrounded carved wood, and then framed in carved and decorated camel bone. The latch is carved wood.
Both sides are identical, mimicking the front design, but with two mosque designs instead of three. Two carved wooden handles. The inside is lined in fabric and has a chain. The back is plain wood. Four feet raise the chest slightly off the ground.
This storage chest was made in the famed wood cooperative in Amazraou, Morocco. The beautiful, richly colored wood is Tamarix, also known as Salt Cedar, and is naturally pest repellent. The wood itself is quite old, but the work is new. The bone pieces, sustainably harvested from camels, are meticulously carved and shaped.
