- Authentic Antique Moroccan Jewish Menorah
- Coin Silver with Brass & Copper
- Hand-Decorated & Engraved
- approx. 15cm tall (6in) x 21cm wide (8in)
This Moroccan Jewish silver menorah lamp comes from the iconic seaside town of Essaouira, Morocco. Once a thriving Jewish community, the town of Essaouira had more than forty synagogues and was renown for its talented artisans.
This menorah is a beautiful example of the craft. Heavy silver, it has extensive chased detailing surrounding a center menorah design, with an antique Moroccan coin with the Star of David dating from the mid- to late-1800s, and a shiny brass lizard above.
The lizard sits upon a hamsa hand, a symbol of protection, and two each side are red cabochons. At the bottom are the traditional eight oil wells for lighting each night of Hanukah. Each hinged door has additional scrollwork and a Star of David, with a red cabochon. Even the back of the Menorah is fully chased and beautiful in and of itself.
It is not known exactly how old this item is, but it is pre-1950, when most Jews left Morocco. This is one of the nicest antique Moroccan menorahs we have seen, and it is quite a treasure to behold.
