This large and beautiful silver Hirz pendant necklace was sourced from the High Atlas town of Imlil. An oblong cylinder, hollow inside, although it does not seem to open. The Moroccan Rial coins date from the late 1800s and early 1900s.
It is possible this necklace is a Jewish Mezuzah was created in one of the many Jewish Mellah settlements of Morocco, but it more closely resembles Hirz pendants originating from Yemen, with the Moroccan coins added at a later date. Hirz pendants are often used for holding prayers and are sometimes seen as fertility necklaces. A stunning antique piece not often seen!
