A standout statement piece! This antique Berber dowry trunk was originally filled with fine clothes and bedding and presented by a husband to his future wife. Made in southern Morocco, the chest dates from the early 1900s and is durable and fragrant tamarisk (salt cedar) wood. It has been refurbished in hand-decorated Tuareg leather, with silver and brass repousse, camel bone, and gemstone adornments.
The front of this large trunk has two large silver melange repousse hamsa hands, each with a large piece of amber copal resin in the middle and dotted with red coral and green malachite beads. In the center, under the beautifully engraved latch is a large silver melange flower, containing a center of orange copal. To the side of the latch are four silver repousse flowers, and each corner has antique coins of silver and copper, with metal rivets providing further visual delight (and protection).
The top of the chest is just as stunning. In the center is a large hamsa hand, with copal in the center and inlaid lapis lazuli blue and red coral on top and bottom. Four silver melange repousse flowers with copal centers, and two smaller silver design inlaid with coral frame the hamsa hand. Multiple antique coins and metal rivets, some stained with henna to a ruddy color, complete the lid.
Each side of the trunk has a silver melange flower with coral center, with a trumpet-like flower on each side, additional coins, and more silver repousse stars.
The entirety of the chest is covered in intricated hand-painted Berber leather, with geometric tribal designs visible underneath all the adornment. The back and inside is lined in hand-painted leather, and all edges are protected by a thick repousse silver melange. The side carrying handles are metal, with leather straps for the lid hinge.
This chest, known as a sandok, was sourced from the southern Morocco desert town of Zagora, where it was refurbished at the Amazraou cooperative, home to some of the finest woodworkers in the country.
