This Moroccan Jewish silver menorah lamp comes from the iconic seaside town of Essaouira, Morocco. Once a thriving Jewish community, the town of Essaouira had more than forty synagogues and was renown for its talented artisans.
This menorah is a beautiful example of the craft. Solid silver, it has florid scrollwork surrounding a center menorah design, with the Star of David and a oil well above. Below are the traditional eight oil wells for lighting each night of Hanukah. Each hinged door has additional scrollwork and a Star of David. Cutout shapes to each side of the menorah design and on the doors add further uniqueness to the piece.
It is not known exactly how old this item is, but it is pre-1950, when most Jews left Morocco. This is one of the nicest antique Moroccan menorahs we have seen, and it is quite a treasure to behold.
