Large Moroccan Berber Mirror - Hand-Carved Wood with Camel Bone
This Moroccan mirror is a stunning work of art! Entirely hand-carved, this has three separate mirrors -- one large and two smaller above. The main mirror is framed in ornate hand-carved vines, with the wood blackened to accentuate the relief carving. On the bottom and side of the frame are rivets. Surrounding the mirror are hand-carved relief designs, often inlaid with carved and decorated camel bone.
Above the main mirror are two additional mirrors, in the iconic shape of a mosque, an integral part of Moroccan culture. These smaller mirrors are framed in carved and decorated camel bone. One each side are two rectangles made from camel bone, and inside this are shapes of Moroccan doors and the traditional Saharan tent. This entire amazing design is flanked on each side with hand-carved round wooden columns, festooned with eye-shaped camel bone pieces.
This mirror was made in the famed wood cooperative in Amazraou, Morocco. The wood is Tamarix, also known as Salt Cedar, and is naturally pest repellent. The wood itself is quite old, but the work is new. The bone pieces, sustainably harvested from camels, are meticulously carved and shaped.
