Moroccan Islamic Quran Teaching Tablet - Hand Painted Illuminated Wood, Gilt - Muslim Antique
Vintage hand-painted hardwood tablet inscribed with verse from the Holy Quran. This tablet is circa early to mid 20th-century and is from the southern Moroccan desert town of Zagora. Used in schools to teach the Quran, students between the ages of 10 - 17 would study the tablet for one week, then fast for one week, then study the tablet again.
Hand-hewn from a single piece of wood, the elegantly tapered tablet is reminiscent of an Illuminated manuscript with intricately hand painted Arabic calligraphy and Islamic design. Slightly polished and smooth from years of use, the tablet is tapered from top to bottom; the crest of the frame is painted with salmon, teal, yellow, blue and spring green paint. An exterior border of salmon and teal dotted with orange follows, with a decorative blue design underneath and surrounding the main area of the tablet.
A dark green, light yellow and orange design with gilt accenting is followed by calligraphic headings in traditional Islamic door designs, this time decorated with pink. White, purple, and additional gilding. Then comes an Islamic knot pattern flecked with indigo blue and dotted with orange, with gold "x" centres and spring green flourishes. Another border in bright yellow and green is next, framing the brief text, which is enclosed in a multi pointed star design. This area has pink, white, purple, orange, indigo, and gold.
There is slight rubbing to the tablet, but the colors are still exceptionally vibrant. The back of the tablet has additional Islamic calligraphy, written in a much larger hand. While reproductions of tablets such as this are still produced throughout Morocco, it is unusual to find an original in this excellent condition. This tablet was sourced directly from Zagora and is of significant historical and religious value.
The front of the tablet features Sourat "The Man-Kind" Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, (1)Â The King of mankind, (2)Â The God of mankind, (3)Â From the evil of the sneaking whisperer, (4)Â Who whispereth in the hearts of mankind, (5)Â Of the jinn and of mankind. (6) The back: These are Sorart Alfatiha - The Opening - In the name of God, the infinitely Compassionate and Merciful. Praise be to God, Lord of all the worlds. The Compassionate, the Merciful. Ruler on the Day of Reckoning. You alone do we worship, and You alone do we ask for help. Guide us on the straight path, the path of those who have received your grace; not the path of those who have brought down wrath, nor of those who wander astray. Amen. And Sourat Al ikhlas The Faithfulness Say: He is Allah, the One and Only;Allah, the Eternal, Absolute; He begetteth not, nor is He begotten and there is none like unto him.
