Vintage Moroccan Berber Necklace with Tagemout Egg
A true collector’s find, worthy of a museum. This Berber Wedding and Fertility necklace was crafted for a Moroccan Bride to wear on her wedding day. It features two enameled Tagemout fertility beads and a mix of Amber resin beads. In addition there are Amazonite beads and shells.
Tagemout refers to an egg-shaped bead which ranges in size according to the prosperity of the wearer. These beads are traditionally decorated with filigree metal work and enamel. The tagemout bead is also a symbol of fertility.
Traditional Berber jewelry is a sign of a woman's wealth and also reflects her cultural traditions and tribal affiliation. The Fertility necklace has been restrung, with wrapped red wool providing additional decoration down the back. The use of wool ties is a typical feature of traditional Berber jewelry.
